Kiyomizu Temple

Temple of Exorcism Wrapped in Beautiful Nature

This is the leading dojo in the San’in area for the Esoteric Buddhist teachings of the Tendai sect. This dojo is located behind the stone pavement approach road in a thick grove of trees. The principal object of worship in this temple is the eleven-face Goddess of Mercy and this is familiar as a temple of exorcisms. The grounds of the temple that are said to measure about 165,000 square meters make the best of the mountains, valleys and forests. The temple is also home to many important cultural properties, including the San’in area’s only three-storied pagoda. These grounds are wrapped in a majestic air. The area has been listed as a prefectural natural park. You can see beautiful colors throughout the four seasons here: cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, red leaves in fall and snowy scenery in winter. The temple also offers zen meditation and sutra transcribing experiences. Shojin ryori (vegetarian cuisine) is served at the ryokan (Japanese-style inn) in the park.
